NALUKETTU is a typical traditional homestead of old Kerala tharavadu, where most of the joint families were lived together under one roof.

The traditional architecture is typically a rectangular structure where four halls are joined together with a central courtyard open to the sky. The four halls on the sides are named Vadakkini (Northern block), Padinjattini (Western block), Kizhakini (Eastern block) and Thekkini (Southern block).

The center of Nalukettu is a nadumuttam, which is an open courtyard that served as the focal point of interactions between the family as well as various household activities and festivities.

In Nalukettu, one can experience nature from within the house. The temperature and humidity control is very effective in this style, which offers you a healthier environment. The natural light utilization in this type of building is also much better than in the other types.
So, staying in this serene holistic atmosphere is highly beneficial for maintaining good health and to cure diseases.

This architecture concept is purely based on the principles of ancient Thatchu Shasthra and traditional vasthu. Just like Nalukettu, the larger and wealthier families had ettukettu or, the rarer, pathinaarukettu houses featured eight and 16 blocks with two and four courtyards respectively.

Nalukettu architecture was evolved in the era of feudal lords, Nairs and Namboothiris who were known for their aristocracy and caste dominance. When years passed, these traditional houses were dismantled due to several reasons. Now, only a few ancient Nalukettu homes exist in Kerala.

But the 'Nalukettu' concept has come into vogue once again. Kerala is witnessing an interesting trend in home architecture: the return of the traditional ‘Nalukettu'.

Used by not only houses but also restaurants, ayurvedic spas and other establishments that are traditional to Kerala, the naalukettu design is now seeing a massive reprise. Even though they are not as glorious and rambling as the older naalukettu houses, they are a treat to the eyes.
