Nehru Trophy Boat Race began in 1952 on the occasion of the visit of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru to Alappuzha which is a not-to-be missed spectacle in Alleppey. It is in the months of August that the moist, rain-drenched earth and the glorious ever flowing backwaters burst into song together, as over hundred thousand men and women gather on the banks Punnamda Lake to witness a spectacular water regatta - the SNAKE BOAT RACES. With boats being sponsored by different villages, the Boat Race has grown into Alappuzha's most important tourist event. Competition is severe. Over 100 rowers in each boat, race to finish to the accompaniment of rousing music. Boat race crews begin to practice for the race months before the great day. They live together, eat together to work themselves into a smooth, co-ordinated team.

The drum beats along with the boat songs known as Vanchipattu builds the environment for a perfect event. The rowers sing songs called ' Vanchi pattu ' to the rhythm of the oars - a feast for the eyes and the ears. The largest of the 'Chundan' boats the length of which varies between a 100 and a 150  feet can seat a 120 rowers, 60 on each side. It curves to a height of 15 to 20 feet, like the neck of an angry snake. The prow is pointed and stands 4 feet above the water with its glistening brass embellishments. With specially made long oars, the main steer-man of the boat stands on the amaram. The efficiency with which they handles the oar is what establishes the speed of the boat and its balance. They claim that a single strong plunge of the oar into the water can take the boat three leaps forward to a distance of 30 feet.
