When the name Alleppey comes into our mind, the first activity that we would think is the backwaters and the houseboats. Unfortunately, for many, this is the only activity that is present in Alleppey. Let’s break some myth here. Alleppey has many interesting activities apart from backwaters. To begin with, Alleppey is also called as Alappuzha. It is a land of backwaters in Kerala. The place is a paradise in the countryside, starting from lagoons to palm-fringed natural canals, which is about 62 km away from Cochin. Alleppey has beaches, lagoons, rivers, canals and many other natural beauties except forest.
Pandavan Rock
Deriving its name from the Pandavas in the epic Indian tale of Mahabharata, the Pandavan Rock is known for being one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. It is widely believed that this was the cave inside which the Pandavas stayed during the time of their exile. Currently, this beautiful rock serves as a backdrop for a picnic spot.
Tourists are supposed to walk to the destination, but with family or friends, the walk becomes quite interesting and an incredible learning experience. Travelers can easily enjoy the stunning views of hills and forests along the trails. During the walk, the popular Kallada Dam is also visible and people can take a small detour to enjoy the dam and these views.
Picnic at Marari Beach
Nothing says relaxation than a picnic on the beach and sheltered under palm trees. We can enjoy a similar beach picnic at Marari beach. Marari Beach is known as a spot for picnic and beach strolling. It is a very quiet beach, where we could enjoy the sunset and sunrise. The water is safe and clean for swimming and other water-related activities. There are a few resorts on the beach. For an economical way of enjoying the beach, it’s better to organize an evening picnic, where we can enjoy the sunset as we rest on the beach sand.
Visiting Krishnapuram Palace
Krishnapuram Palace was built for Marthanda Varma in the 18th century. The Krishnapuram Palace is not like the ones that we would have visited in other places. Though it is a palace, it has tiled roofs like a hut, which is an authentic and traditional palace of Kerala.
Inside the palace, we can find many rare sculptures, exquisite ancient paintings, mural paintings and many others. The most important attraction in this palace is the Gajendra Mural which is 11 feet long which is the largest mural in the state. This palace is a little away from the heart of Alleppey.
Swarovski Crystal Collection at Revi Karunakaran Museum
Revi Karunakaran museum is a unique styled museum that has items of Revi Karunakaran family, who was a collector of artworks. We can find a lot of old and rare artworks here. This includes crystal wares, Tanjore paintings, mural painting, ivory works, antique furniture, porcelain wares and 1948 Buick Super. There are more than 3000 items in this museum and it is a unique styled museum that we must visit.
